What is a freestanding pergola?
A freestanding pergola stands on its own posts — it isn't attached to a house or shed. Every plan here uses the same post-and-beam engineering as our attached pergolas: knee braces at each post-to-beam joint, sized rafters, and a surface foundation on a poured pad.
Do pergolas need a building permit?
Many jurisdictions exempt small open-lattice structures below a square-footage threshold, but rules vary — check your local building department before building.
What's the difference between a pergola and a carport?
A pergola has an open lattice roof for partial shade; a carport has a solid shingled roof for full weather protection. Both use the same freestanding post-and-beam framing. See our carport plans for the solid-roof version.
