Chicken Coop Sizing FAQ
How many chickens fit in a coop of a given size?
Plan on roughly 4 square feet of interior coop floor per hen, plus 10 square feet of run per hen if the flock gets daytime run access — that run figure is usually the real limit, not the coop floor. On our plans: 6×6 (36 sq ft) — up to 6 chickens; 6×8 (48 sq ft) — up to 8 chickens; 8×12 (96 sq ft) — up to 8 chickens; 8×10 (80 sq ft) — up to 10 chickens; 10×12 (120 sq ft) — up to 12 chickens; 10×16 (160 sq ft) — up to 14 chickens; 12×20 (240 sq ft) — up to 20 chickens.
What size chicken coop do I need for a small starter flock?
For 4-6 chickens, the 6×6 plan (36 sq ft) is the smallest walk-in coop in the catalog — still tall enough to step inside and clean.
What's the largest chicken coop plan available?
The 12×20 plan (240 sq ft interior) is sized for up to 20 chickens — the run, not the coop interior, is what caps the flock at that number.
Are these chicken coop plans predator-proof?
Run plans model a hardware-cloth run with a ground apron and a latched run door, and every coop carries lockable nesting box lids and a pop door. No plan can promise predator-proof — burying the apron, choosing ½-inch cloth, and closing the pop door nightly are on the keeper. The build notes on each plan say where to tighten hardware for heavy raccoon or fox pressure.
